Working at a Sit Stand Desk

What is a Sit Stand Desk?

A Sit Stand Desk is simply an adjustable desk or table that allows the user to alternate between sitting and standing. We all know that sitting for long periods of time can harm the body in various ways. By alternating body positions throughout the day, you may be able to better avoid the risks associated with sitting at a computer, or standing upright, all day.

Are Sit Stand Desks Worth It?

Although it’s certainly a matter of opinion, I personally think so! About three years ago, I got a sit stand desktop converter for my office. Mine is a monitor stand and keyboard tray that sits on my existing desk, and raises and lowers using gas-assisted springs. Having the option to alternate my position has alleviated some of the hip and lower back pain that I was starting to experience. I have also found that sometimes I can be more productive and have better concentration when I stand, depending on what I’m working on.

What is the Best Sit Stand Desk

There are a few things to consider when choosing a sit stand desk. First of all, it’s very important that the desk offers enough flexibility to be set up to the correct height. The table height should be at (or just slightly below) your elbow height, so that your arms are bent at a 90 degree angle when using your keyboard. Additionally, you should consider if it will be easy to adjust your sit stand desk height. Inexpensive desks sometimes need to be cranked to adjust the height. Other units adjust with pressure-assisted springs.

To use a sit stand desk properly, you should switch between standing and sitting a few times a day, even as frequently as every hour. The most convenient sit stand desks offer electronic control for effortless change in heights. Our adjustable sit stand desk offers electronic control with programmable memory, so you get the perfect height with the push of a button.

I bet I know what you’re thinking – “Do the Amish really make an electric sit stand desk? The Amish don’t use electricity!” Although it varies from community to community, generally, the Amish will use electricity in certain circumstances. It is common for Amish people to use electricity in their businesses, but typically it must be generated on site. In the case of our electric sit stand desks, our builder Leroy buys the motorized base, and adds his own hand-crafted tops and feet. He also offers a deluxe version with a storage drawer and wood-framed base.

How Much is a Sit Stand Desk?

That will depend on the style and features chosen. A desktop converter, like I have at the office, can cost anywhere from $100 to $450, and can be a good option if you want to keep your existing desk. Electronic sit stand desks can range from $500 to over $2000. Our adjustable sit stand desk starts at $810 for a red oak top (over 20 stain colors available) and is $895 in brown maple, as displayed in our showroom, or in rustic cherry, or rustic quartersawn white oak. The deluxe version with dual motor lift, storage drawer, and full wood frame starts at $2105 in red oak.
